Carl Foiles Award
This award goes to an "Outstanding Graduating Senior in Physics or Astrophysics"
who was an active participant in research in the department while a student.
It is named after Carl Foiles, an MSU Physics faculty member who passed
away suddenly in 1997. Carl Foiles received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed
matter physics from the University of Arizona in 1964. He was first appointed
as an Assistant Professor at MSU in 1966. The family of Professor Foiles' made a generous donation to the University
for the purpose of endowing this award. 2003 was the first year that it
was presented. The instructions regarding this annual prize were that it should
be given for excellent achievement with strong consideration for research participation
as well as for academic performance.
