Synthesis, structure, chemistry and growth of composite B-N-C nanotubes and filled carbon nanotubes

Different Kratschmer-Huffman electric arc discharge processes have been used to produce various kinds of nanotubes: nanotubes made of carbon layers and/or boron nitride (BN) layers and carbon nanotubes filled with various elements including Cr, Ni, Yb, Dy, S, Ge. This paper will review on the morphology (microstructure) structure and the chemistry of these varieties of tubes as they can be investigated by using High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and spatially resolved Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS). It will be shown that these observations provide a qualitative approach on the formation and the growth of the nanotubes. In particular it will be shown that a general scheme of growth proceeding from a liquid state seems to emerge.
