As a part of its mission, the Center for Sensor
Materials (CSM) addresses science education at all levels, from
K-12 through training for professional scientists and engineers. Since
the beginning of the Center, the roles of materials, sensors, and basic
science have been taught at several levels. CSM
promotes and helps support the education outreach efforts of Science Theater,
a Michigan State University student run organization. In addition, CSM
has created, Sensing our World, a week-long summer camp that teaches 7th
and 8th grade students about science and sensors.
Training students in a multidisciplinary
atmosphere of fundamental and applied research, where exceptional science
and engineering are practiced, is a goal of the MRSEC. On the
Michigan State campus, undergraduate and graduate students receive formal
courses that address the specialized, as well as the broad, aspects
of materials education. Access to state-of-the-art Shared Facilities
and the teamwork approach of the MRSEC prepares students for careers
in industry, as well as academia, and encourages critical thinking.
The
Center supports undergraduate education through a number of highly
structured full-time and summer academic programs such as the NSF
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).
The Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program affords high school
teachers pragmatic research experience in understanding materials through
projects involving synthesis and characterization. RET participants
work with Center faculty and their graduate students and postdoctoral
associates. MRSEC will provide access to shared facilities, training
in their use, and expect active participation in MRSEC group meetings.
