What to put into web pages (and what will work)
- These will work in virtually any browser
- Straight Text
- Basic HTML Markup
- These will work in virtually any graphical browser
- Inline graphics, including clickable imagemaps
(Text mode browsers will show the contents
of the "ALT" tag; recent versions of Lynx can handle some
imagemaps as menus)
- GIF Format
- JPEG/JFIF Format
(most newer versions of all browsers)
X-Bitmap Format
Stand-alone graphics
(most recent browsers handle the above formats
themselves; helper applications can extend the number of
file types supported)
These may require a particular browser
- Tables
(different browsers handle different subsets of table commands)
Frames
(multiple individually-scrolling windows in a document)
Equations
(still in planning stages, but may start appearing soon)
Usenet News
E-mail facilities
These generally require helper applications
- Movies
- QuickTime (MOV)
- MPEG
- MS Video for Windows (AVI)
- Audio
Various formats: WAV, SND, AIFF, AU
Some browsers are starting to support these internally on some
platforms.
Formatted Text / Word Processing
- Microsoft Word
- Rich-Text-Format (RTF)
- PostScript / Encapsulated PostScript
- Adobe Acrobat (PDF)
Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML)
Sends 3-D information to the browsing system, which can then
perform the desired rendering and animation locally.
