INDEX C1: SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION

C1.01 SQUIRREL CAGE PROJECTION

Shadow projection of beads on a rotating cylinder show a sine wave. When masked so that only one bead is visible, its shadow moves linearly up and down.

C1.02 CHLADNI FIGURES (Modes of Oscillation)

Sand collects along the nodal lines of vibrating plates.

C1.03 SONOMETER

The vibrational frequency of stretched string varies with its length.

C1.04 FLAME WAVE

Standing waves are set up in a gas filled pipe. Flame height above the pipe is an analog of the wave inside.

C1.05 HARTMANN'S SHADOW PROJECTION

Objects are placed on a large turntable in front of the room. Even though they are moving in circles their projected shadows appear to move back and forth on astraight line.

C1.06 PROJECTION OF A ROTATING SPHERE

The shadow of a sphere mounted on the circumference of a horizontal turntable moves in a straight line.

C1.07 OHP SQUIRREL CAGE

One dot moves about a circle while another moves along a diameter maintaining the same height.

C1.09 PERIOD OF A PHYSICAL PENDULUM

The period of a suspended bar grows longer as the support is moved toward the center of mass.

C1.10 KATER PENDULUM

A model of a Kater Pendulum for determining G.

C1.11 RING PENDULUM

A ring pendulum has the same period as a simple pendulum whose length is equal to the ring's circumference.

C1.12 TORSIONAL PENDULUM

Shows angular harmonic motion, resonance, and damping.

C1.13 WILBERFORCE PENDULUM (Modes of Oscillation)

Shows the exchange of energy between two modes of oscillation.

C1.14 LISSAJOUS SAND FIGURES

A variety of patterns are formed by sand dripping from an oscillating funnel.

C1.15 SINE WAVE THROUGH A SLOT

A sine wave is painted on a board. As the board is dragged behind a vertical slot the visible image is of a dot moving up and down.

C1.16 LISSAJOUS OSCILLOSCOPE FIGURES

A variety of patterns are formed by two perpendicular voltage sources.

C1.17 TONAL PENDULUM

Weights hang from a wire over a resonant box. As the weights swing, the wire is plucked, and one hears the variation in tension as a variation in pitch.

C1.18 CIRCULAR SWEEP

The oscilloscope beam is swept in a circle and deflected radially by the waveform to be displayed.

C1.19 U-TUBE OSCILLATORS

The liquid in a U-tube undergoes simple harmonic motion with the period dependent on the amount of fluid.

C1.20 LISSAJOUS SOAP FIGURES

A laser beam is reflected off the surface of a thin soap film. Behind the film is a speaker driven by an oscillator. The relection resembles a Lissajous figure.

C1.21 SHM ON THE AIR TRACK

Carts on the air track connected by springs serve as coupled oscillators.

C1.22 MASS & SPRING

A mass hangs from a spring.

C1.23 ELASTIC PENDULUM

A weight hangs from the end of a spring. When set in motion, the system oscillates between the simple spring mode and the simple pendulum mode.

C1.24 SIMPLE PENDULUM

A simple pendulum consisting of a heavy bob on a string from the ceiling for display.
