INDEX C2 : MECHANICAL WAVES

C2.01 WEIGHTED HOSE (Transverse Waves)

Tubing filled with shot shows the reflection of a transverse pulse from a fixed end.

C2.02 SLINKY (Longitudinal Waves)

A Slinky is used to show longitudinal waves.

C2.03 WAVE OPEN AT ONE END (Standing Waves)

Shows standing waves in a spring with one end fixed and the other free.

C2.04 WAVE OPEN AT BOTH ENDS (Standing Waves)

Shows standing waves in a spring with both ends free.

C2.05 BELL LABS WAVE MACHINE (Transverse Waves)

A mechanical analog for transverse waves.

C2.06 WESTERN ELECTRIC WAVE MACHINE (Standing Waves)

Apparatus for producing standing waves in a rope fixed at both ends.

C2.08 STROKE ROD (Standing Waves)

An aluminium rod is held at nodal points and rubbed with rosined chamios to produce different pitches.

C2.09 LARGE RIPPLE TANK

A large ripple tank mounted on a cart.

C2.10 OHP RIPPLE TANK

A smaller ripple tank for an overhead projector.

C2.11 DRIVEN MASS ON A SPRING (Mechanical Resonance)

A mass on a spring is driven by a motor. As the motor speed is varied, the system passes through resonance.

C2.12 MECHANICAL RESONANCE STRIPS

Metal strips of different lengths are driven at varying speeds to show the relationship between length and fundamental frequency.

C2.14 LONGITUDINAL WAVE MACHINE

A series of rods connected by springs produce longitudinal waves.

C2.15 TACOMA NARROWS

A bridge is destroyed by resonance. Available as a four minute super 8 film loop or as an eight minute sequence on video disc.

C2.16 SUPERPOSITION MODEL

Provides a visual and hands-on representation of how sine waves combine. Illustrates constructive and destructive addition.
