INDEX E3 : FORCES ON MOVING CHARGES

E3.01 EDDY CURRENT BRAKING

Copper plates swing pendulum-fashion between the poles of an electromagnet. When power is applied, the solid plate stops immediately upon coming between the poles, while the toothed plated continues to swing.

E3.02 JUMPING WIRE

A wire hangs loosely between the poles of a horseshoe magnet. When a current passes through the wire, the wire is either pulled into the magnet or pushed out.

E3.03 MAGNETIC TRAPEZE

The crossbar of the trapeze hangs just inside the mouth of a horseshoe magnet. When a current passes through the crossbar, it is either pulled into the magnet or pushed away.

E3.04 BENDING THE BEAM

When a bar magnet approaches a cathode ray tube, the beam in the tube is bent.

E3.05 MALTESE CROSS

Shows cathode rays travel in essentially straight lines by putting a maltese cross in the path of the rays and observing the shadow.

E3.09 LINEAR ENGINE
