Hello and Welcome to the  NT-Users@pa.msu.edu  Mailing list!

The purpose of this mailing list is to bring together all users of the
Microsoft Windows NT operating system in the Physics/Astronomy
Department.

The principle is simple: any E-Mail message sent to

                NT-Users@pa.msu.edu

will automatically be forwarded to everyone on the list.
- This E-Mail address is NOT case-sensitive.
- Please do not send huge files that will clutter people's mailboxes,
but send a pointer to a WWW or FTP location instead (or ask for help).
- Please only send straight text messages because not everyone uses
Netscape or MS Internet Explorer for a Mail Viewer.


The general goal of this list is to propagate (useful) information gained
by one user to all other NT users of the PA Department.  I'd picture at
least two areas where this list should become valuable to the PA NT
community.   First, you could tell the rest of us about a particular
piece of software or documentation that you think might be useful to
some/all of us, or you may have discovered some feature of NT or some
popular NT application that makes your life easier.   Second, the less
experienced users could ask questions that might easily be answered by
the more experienced people on the list, and you can find out if somebody
else in the department is using some program you are considering using.

This is definitely NOT MEANT TO COMPETE WITH THE HELPDESK system of the PA
Department.  Don't expect someone else to spend his time hunting down a
solution for you, BUT you could get pointed in the right direction to look
for yourself.  Don't expect to get someone else to install some piece of
software for you, BUT you could find out what is involved, or find out
about bugs, etc.  I'd expect you could receive relevant information
quickly, and also reach a broader range of expertise than with the helpdesk
system.  We are not replacing the helpdesk and computer support staff, but
they are currently overloaded, and will welcome any (positive) assistance
anyone can offer for little effort.  This list could help as a filter
before sending a question to helpdesk where you could reach a better
understanding of your problem, and thus better formulate your request to
the helpdesk.   Who knows, some of the computer Staff people may be joining
the list too...


-  Our NT-USERS Mailing List is a local group of local users.  There are
many world-wide NT Mailing Lists, Newsgroups, Web Sites and all kinds of
NT- related resources.

-  I will try and archive all messages sent to this list by simply copying
them to the new  MSUPA.NT-USERS folder that George has setup for us on the
PA-Info bulletin board on Dirac (type $ INFO to start PA_Info).

-  I will also try and collect the important information into some (simple)
Web Pages at http://www.pa.msu.edu/ftp/pub/nt-users, as time allows, and
you are more than welcome to help.   Send me your contributions, comments,
or questions regarding the Web pages.

-  We are using a very simple mailing list software where a file contains
the E-Mail addresses of all the people subscribing to the list.  There
is no software support to maintain this file.  If you wish to add/remove
your name from the list, you will need to send me a note.
