Outreach

Faculty and students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy are involved in several projects sharing with the general public our excitement in carrying out scientific research. Physics graduate students at MSU founded Science Theatre, a student designed and run outreach group. Science Theatre brings unique and exciting science demonstrations to schools and community events throughout the state of Michigan in the form of hands-on and stage show activities. In addition to their service to the community, Science Theatre members enhance their graduate education by traveling to national conferences, by making contacts in research, education, and funding fields, and by expanding their teaching and presentation skills.

A groundbreaking aspect of the astronomy/astrophysics SOAR program is a remote observing feature which will give the MSU campus a real-time link to the telescope. Faculty and students will conduct their observations from East Lansing, encouraging a wider level of participation in fundamental research can take place. The SOAR project will also facilitate Science SOARS, a partnership that unites scientific discovery, education, outreach for K-12 students, and the people of the state of Michigan.
