1998-99 MSU Physics & Astronomy Awards
The Michigan State University Department of Physics and Astronomy is proud of
its members who were the recipients this year of various awards at the
University level, and also of the recipients of the various annual Departmental
Awards. It also congratulates this year's
degree recipients.
This award goes to the year's "Outstanding Graduate Student in Physics or
Astrophysics."

This award goes to the year's "Outstanding Senior in
Physics or Astrophysics."

Awards
This award goes to the year's "Outstanding Junior in Physics
or Astrophysics."

This award is presented to faculty, staff and/or students
who have served a group or groups that are not part of the University.
- Gary Westfall receives
award this year for his many years of participation in the Science Olympiad
and for his many projects involving local high school student.

Previous years' Physics &: Astronomy Outreach
Awards
This award goes to a faculty member teaching graduate level courses, selected by
a vote of the graduate students.
- Mark Dykman [Since he arrived at
MSU Professor Dykman has taught several graduate level courses covering
special topics in Statistical Mechanics. This award reflects the the graduate students' appreciation
of his teaching of these courses.]

Previous years' Outstanding Faculty Teaching Awards
This award goes to an outstanding TA, selected by the teaching faculty.
- John Brecht was a TA for the past two years in two virtual
university physics courses, PHY 231C and PHY 232C.
He oversaw the day-to-day operation of the courses, assisting students
with problems as they arose and carried out his duties in a responsible
fashion, beyond what was expected of him.

Previous years' Thomas H. Osgood Memorial Faculty Teaching Awards
(The award is new; this is the fourth year of the award)
This award is presented to a staff member who has served above & beyond the call
of duty, selected by a vote of the faculty.

Thomas Glasmacher.
Faculty Promotions
David Tomanek was promoted to the rank of
Professor. Professor Tomanek, a theorist in the area of Condensed Matter Physics,
came to MSU as an Assistant Professor in 1987. He was promoted to the Associate
Professor rank in 1993. He received his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the
Freie Universitat in Berlin
Thomas Glasmacher was awarded
tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Professor
Glasmacher has been at MSU since 1995 when he came here as Assistant Professor. He
has his PhD in Nuclear Physics which he received from Florida State University
in 1992.
Simon Billinge was also awarded
tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor. He came to MSU in 1994 after
a postdoctoral stay at Los Alamos. He received his PhD in Materials Science and
Engineering in 1992 fro the University of Pennsylvania.
Other Awards
Tim Beers was the coordinator for the
production of the SOAR telescope project brochure and wrote most of the text. This
brochure received an award from the Lansing Advertising Association.
