To: REU students Arrival in East Lansing ----------------------- Most of you will be arriving in East Lansing on Sunday, June 2. Here are some instructions. 1. You will be staying in the Owen Graduate Dorm. It is located at the corner of Shaw Lane and Bogue Street on the MSU campus. It is catty-corner across the street from the Law School building. There is a receptionist available 24 hours 7 days a week. So when you arrive, go to the main desk, identify yourself (and tell them that you are with the physics REU program) and the receptionist will have your name and will check you into your room. If you are arriving by plane, take a taxi from the Lansing airport to the Owen Graduate Dorm. The taxi driver should know where it is if you give him street names (Shaw and Bogue). The taxi fare should be $10 to $15 (I don't know the exact amount). If you are driving, get a map from the internet. The MSU web site (www.msu.edu) has campus maps. You can unload your car at the dorm, but you will need to park in Lot 91 at the corner of Service Road and Hagadorn Street. I believe you can park free in Lot 91. That parking lot is about a 10 minute walk from the Owen Graduate Dorm. 2. The rooms are singles. You will have a phone in your room. The dorm provides sheets and pillows. You will also get a meal card which you can use at the Cafeteria in Owen. The REU program pays for your room and partly for your meals. I think most students find that the amount provided for meals will cover breakfast and lunch. Then you need to pay yourself for dinner. You can charge meals at Owen to the meal card, and pay Owen what you owe on the card at the end of the program. If you are coming by car here are some items you might want to bring with you: -- a fan; the dorm is not air conditioned -- a computer; there are internet connections in all the dorm rooms. However, you don't need a computer because the research projects will provide computers. 3. There will be a get-acquainted reception for all the REU students Sunday evening: Time: 6-9 PM Sunday June 2. Place: Atrium of the Biophysical Sciences Building (come to the main entrance on Wilson Road). The BPS building is a short walk from Owen. It may be locked, but I'll be there to open the door. Everyone should attend -- we'll have pizza and this is your chance to meet the other students! 4. The program gets started officially on Monday, June 3. There will be a meeting at 9:00 AM in Room 1400 BPS. All research supervisors and students should attend. You will meet your supervisor at the meeting, and he will take you to the lab and give you the first instructions about your project. Students working at the cyclotron lab will get a general introduction to the laboratory at 10:30 AM Monday, and Level 1 Radiation Safety training 1-4 PM Monday. 5. KEEP ALL TRAVEL RECEIPTS! If you are coming by plane, we need to copy your plane ticket receipts. If you are driving we can pay some expenses, such as mileage and your motel room if necessary. 6. I will be out of town Wednesday (May 29). If you have any questions, send me e-mail or phone Thursday or Friday. Other contacts if you need immediate assistance: Prof. Wolfgang Bauer - Physics and Astronomy Prof. Michael Thoennessen - Cyclotron Laboratory You can get their contact information from the internet (www.pa.msu.edu or www.nscl.msu.edu). I am looking forward to meeting you all! Dan Stump REU program in Physics and Astronomy Michigan State University
