Department of Physics and Astronomy

Research Experience for Undergraduates
Internships, Summer 2001

Sharon Seun and Michael Lennek with NSCL Miniball Group

General Information

During this program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), by the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), by the Center for Fundamental Materials Research/Materials Research Science and Engeneering Center (CFMR/MRSEC) and by Michigan State University (MSU), twenty undergraduate students will gain research experience in physics by carrying out specific projects under direct supervision of Physics/Astronomy faculty or National Superconducting Cyclotron staff. Experimental and theoretical projects in accelerator physics, acoustics, astronomy, astrophysics, atomic physics, chemical physics, computational physics, condensed matter physics, materials science, high energy physics, low temperature physics, medical physics, and nuclear physics are available. A list of available projects will be mailed out to the selected students (2000 offered projects), and the students will then be paired up with the project and professor of their choice.

Undergraduates, preferably sophomores or juniors, who have completed an introductory physics course and have completed or are taking an advanced physics course, are encouraged to apply.

A series of lectures by Physics/Astronomy faculty will be held to give students a broad perspective on current research directions in physics and astronomy, and the opportunities available for careers in this field. At the end of the program, students will write a brief report on their project, and make a fifteen minute oral presentation.

To maximize interactions between students, all students are housed in the same building (the Owen Graduate Center). We will organize social activities and excursions to provide an informal atmosphere where students can get to know each other and a range of Physics/Astronomy faculty and staff.

Dates for the 2001 program will be June 4 through August 10. Allowances are made for students whose classes extend until the middle of June.

Students in 2001 will receive a stipend of $3300 plus room and $4.00 per day partial board. In addition, travel expenses will partially reimbursed.

The application deadline for the 2001 program will be March 15, 2001. Apply by following the How to apply link below.
