COMPUTER MODELLING OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Coupled atmosphere, land/vegetation, ocean, and sea ice models have advanced significantly over the last decade; however, there are many uncertainties. A review of the advances being incorporated into new geration climate models will be given as well as discussion of the future of climate modelling with massive parallel processor computers. Computer animations of high resolution atmosphere, ocean and sea ice simulations will be shown.

WHAT SHOULD WE BELIEVE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE?

Climate has always changed. So what is unique about what has happened over the last century or so? Many climate researchers believe that mankind is changing the earth's system such that global warming is taking place. Other scientists are skeptical of this view and think that the observed changes result from natural climate variability. A review of recently observed climate change will be presented with examples of computer simulations. Discussion of the uncertainties will include an analysis of policy options.
