NOTES and COMMENTS:

( a ) Astrophysics majors usually complete the introductory AST 201 and AST 202 sequence in the sophomore year. These courses are prerequisites for more advanced astrophysics courses which are taken in the senior year after required physics courses in the junior year ( PHY 471 and PHY 410 ) have been completed.

( b ) PHY 215, Thermodynamics and Modern Physics, may be taken either in the Fall or Spring semester. The logical place in the sequence would be after the completion of the two semester introductory series (Spring semester).

( c ) PHY 321, Mechanics I, is a required course for all students completing the B. S. in astronomy and astrophysics, Spring semester of the Sophomore year is sth eappropriate time to complete this course if a student expects to also take the second semester of Mechanics P PHY 432 ) before taking the astrophysics courses AST 401, Stars, and AST 402, Galaxies.

( d ) The Sophomore year is a convenient time in an astronomy/astrophysics major's program to complete the two-courses that make up the University's eight-credit Integrative Studies in Social Sciences requirement: ISP 2xx and ISP 3xx. For a listing of the courses which satisfy this requirement consult the University's catalog of courses. Students who have started the sequence in the Spring of the Sophomore year can complete the Social Science started in the Fall.
