MSU Computer Services, Dial-up and mail.msu.edu System

MSU Computer Services

MSU Academic Computing and Network Services (formerly the MSU Computer Laboratory) manages dial-up access to MSU, the mail.msu.edu E-mail system, the MSU Computer Store, the Microcomputer Labs, and other central computer resources. They distribute handouts about mail.msu.edu, dial-up, and many other computing issues. This brief documentation is intended to answer common questions asked by people in the Department of Physics and Astronomy about these MSU services.

MichNET Dial-up and "guest" access

The official documentation on accessing the dialup system is here, with further information on setting up your system here. For the time being, the basics are as follows (most modern operating systems automate this, so you're probably better off following ACNS's documentation).

To get to the MichNET dial-up, use 999-2678 (8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity) in the Lansing area.

To initiate an interactive login to a particular system, the initial prompt is "Host:". The following example gives the responses for "guest" access:
Host: msu.edu (This is MSU's MichNET domain.)
Login: guest@msu.edu
Password: guest
(This authenticates you in the MichNET domain.)
Then, either
Host: mail.pa.msu.edu (This will connect you to the main Physics-Astronomy server)
or
Host: (any complete Internet address at MSU where you have been given an account.)

To initiate a PPP network session, follow whatever instructions are given with your operating system, using the same username and password for logging into the MichNET server as you would use for a single-system interactive login.

If you have an MSU Net ID and password, they should be used for authentication instead of the "guest" access ("guest" access is subject to restrictions imposed by the MSU Computer Laboratory).
In the next login example, "smithj" is the MSU Net ID and "try14me9" is the password (a made up example: don't use it).
Login: smithj@msu.edu
Password: try14me9
(This authenticates you in the MichNET domain.)
Recent dial-up system statistics can be found here.

Note that out-state MichNET dialup was discontinued during Summer 2007, as explained in this ACNS document.
