Information requested for new P-A network installations

When you apply for an IP address for a new workstation, PC, printer, or other networked device, these are the pieces of information which you should provide (preferably via the http://helpdesk.pa.msu.edu/ web interface or by E-mail to pa-helpdesk@pa.msu.edu from a pa.msu.edu or msu.edu E-mail address).

  1. The name you want the outside world to know the unit by
    (the 'xxxxx' in xxxxx.pa.msu.edu).
  2. The make & model of the unit, including CPU type and speed for workstations and servers
(don't worry about CPU info for printers, switches, webcams or similar systems).
For example, 'Dell Optiplex GX260, 2.0 GHz Pentium-4'.
  3. Room number and building where the unit will physically reside.
    For example, '1404 BPS'.
  4. The operating system the unit is running under.
Examples: MS Windows 2000, MS Windows XP, Linux, Solaris, IRIX, FreeBSD, MacOS (with version number), HP JetDirect, etc.
  5. For Dell systems, the "Service Tag" (usually printed on a sticker on the back, side or top).

You will receive an IP address for this device, usually within a day or two.

For other settings needed in setting up your machine, see http://www.pa.msu.edu/services/computing/netset/.
