COMPUTING OPERATIONS - 1999-2000
Appendix D - Major Projects 1999-2000
This is a list of major computing and networking projects for the
coming year.
Computer Support Services
- Improve support to computer users.
- Make improvements to the PA Helpdesk system.
- Change Unix Web server software. Move www.pa.msu.edu to maxwell.
- Phase out VMS. Archive and/or move user files based on individual
needs.
- Prepare computers for year 2000; make necessary modifications.
(eg. software & hardware upgrades, source code changes)
- Increase support for enhanced security measures.
- Build up departmental NT Domain and central services for PCs and
Macintoshes.
- Build up departmental Linux server and central services for other Linux
computers.
- Learn about new operating systems, software and technologies. (e.g.
Windows 2000, Office 2000, remote network and system management)
Network Services
- Connect remaining computers to hubs on the 100 Mbps Ethernet
backbone in the PA Bldg.
- Improve network monitoring ability.
- Formulate network preventive maintenance plan.
New Science Building
- Continue preparations for the network in the new Science Building.
- Prepare list of prerequisites for computers that will be purchased
or will move to the new Science Building.
Phase Out Older Hardware
- Phase out non-Pentium PCs and computers tied to older operating systems.
- Remove DECserver 100 and 200 terminal servers and attached
character-cell terminals.
- Remove DELNIs, Thick and Thinwire Ethernet cables and Thinwire Ethernet
repeaters.
