How to submit documents to the web site

Documents may be submitted to the soar anonymous ftp site.

  1. FTP to www.pa.msu.edu.
  2. Log in with the user name "anonymous" and with your email address as the password.
  3. cd /pub/incoming/soar
  4. Use the ftp 'put' command to place documents into this directory.
     * Documents may be in ASCII or PostScript format.
     * PostScript documents should be generated with drivers set to produce portable PostScript code.
For example, internal graphics should be in ASCII mode, not binary mode.
Most Unix systems' programs' PostScript output conforms to the portability standards set by Adobe, but settings may need to be checked on PCs and Macs.
     * You will be able to write to this directory but will not be able to read documents in it.
This is for security reasons - if user "anonymous" can't see the names of documents here, where any such login has full write privileges, then the likelihood of someone intentionally overwriting a document placed there by another "anonymous" user is lessened.
Every six hours, incoming files are automatically moved from this directory and their write attributes are changed to disallow further anonymous access.
  5. Use the ftp 'bye' to log off.

The web Archivist will move the document to the appropriate web area, usually within one working day of submission. When you submit a document, please send an email to the Archivist informing him of the fact, indicating for which web area the document is intended, and indicating whether the document is intended to be public or internal.

The discussion section will eventually be run using WebNotice, which will simplify submission for many kinds of items, but the setup for this system is not yet complete.

At present we have a limited capability for scanning printed documents. Contact the Archivist if you need to make use of this capability.
