Spartan Infrared Camera

High Resolution Imaging for the SOAR Telescope

The Spartan Infrared Camera is a $2M instrument for the SOAR 4.2-m telescope on Cerro Pachon, Chile. Its spectral range is 1-2.5μ. It has two plate scales, 41 mas/pixel for diffraction-limited sampling in the H and K bands, and 68 mas/pixel to cover a 5.0×5.0 arcmin field. The Physics-Astronomy Department at Michigan State University designed and built the instrument. The first scientific result, on molecular hydrogen in the Crab Nebula, has been published. See also other scientific results and publications on the instrument.

Michigan State University, the SOAR Telescope, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq), State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), and the National Science Foundation funded this camera.
