Step 3: Comparing

Towards the end of Step 1, I had strongly advocated against peeping into other sample SoPs even before you start yours. This was to prevent you from getting influenced by others' thoughts and style which would inhibit your own individual style.

But after Step 1 and 2, you are no longer in danger of letting others influences your Sop. Your individuality will be imprinted on the document. Indeed, you will also realise how your SoP is different from everyone else's. Now what you want is to polish the language, improve the delivery and basically do all the "make-up". So you can start the process of scouting elsewhere for novel ideas that naturally fit into your SoP. The best source for this is obviously other sample SoPs!

Scourge the net for sample SoP. Many websites such as www.statementofpurpose.com and others will provide you sample SoPs. While scanning through them look for

  •  Novel ideas in presentation techniques, and delivery style

  • Usage of words to express ideas. This may help you in polishing your SoP and make it look professional.

  • Good Words - not necessarily arcane words which are seldom used, but better alternatives to words frequently used in spoken English. Remember - what may sound fine in spoken English may sound horrible as a written piece. Identify this difference and look to avoid using spoken English words in your essay.

Having read these essays, you might be prompted to make further changes in your SoP. So by now, you have a good SoP, albeit a bit long.
