The Cottrell Scholar program develops outstanding early-career teacher-scholars in the fields of physics, astronomy and chemistry who are recognized by their scientific communities for the quality and innovation of their research programs and their academic leadership skills. It provides significant discretionary funding for research, fostering synergy among faculty at major American research universities as well as primarily undergraduate institutions.
The designation as a Cottrell Scholar comes with a $100,000 award for each recipient for research and teaching over three years. Cottrell Scholars engage in an annual networking event, providing them an opportunity to share insights and expertise through the Cottrell Scholar Collaborative. This year’s event will be held in mid-July in Tucson, AZ, and is expected to draw about 100 top educators from around the U.S.
Dr. Chomiuk's research interests revolve around stellar evolution, stellar explosions, and the effects these explosions have on star formation. Her observations of novae and supernovae cover a range of wavelengths with a special emphasis on the radio part of the spectrum. She joined the MSU faculty in 2013 after serving for three years as a Jansky Fellow of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, resident at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Michigan State University.
